How traditional pranayama practices can support us under political and societal pressure

Prāṇāyāma is one of the traditional disciplines of Yoga. Although sometimes translated as “breathwork,” it is considerably more than breathing exercises or stress management techniques. In the yogic teachings and traditions, prāṇāyāma addresses the vital force and has long been used to cultivate steadiness, clarity, vitality, and inner balance, and – for those so inclined – a solid base for spiritual development. In the classical texts, the state of the person and their influence on society and politics, are understood as not separable.
Politics influence our sense of safety. For many people, political developments become a source of grief, hypervigilance, anxiety, or exhaustion. These inner states influence how we think, relate to others, and participate in our communities.
Communities become sustainable when their members are so inwardly balanced and stabilised that they are not gradually consumed by the struggles they are committed to addressing. Personal sustainability is part of community sustainability.
You Will Learn:
- which types of prāṇāyāma are suitable for different states, such as agitation, anxiety, fatigue, overwhelm, or calm
- what distinguishes prāṇāyāma from breathwork
- essential safety principles for practising prāṇāyāma
- You will be guided in a few practices to experience, and may ask suggestions for a practice that is conducive for your situation
